Kaus Sets Debate, Invites Boxer

Reserves room, lecterns, for much-needed issues discussion.

The Kaus for Senate campaign has reserved a room at the S.F. Golden Gateway Holiday Inn on Tuesday, May 25 at 2:00 P.M. for a debate with incumbent Senator Barbara Boxer, whom he's challenging in the June 8 Democratic primary.

"We know Senator Boxer will be in San Francisco then, because she's having a $35,000-a-couple fundraiser a few blocks away that evening." Boxer will hold a reception at the posh Fairmont Hotel a few blocks away that afternoon.

"Surely she can take some time before resuming her frantic hoovering of campaign cash to walk down the street to the Holiday Inn and debate the actual issues she's been avoiding in the primary--like her lockstep loyalty to organized labor, or support for illegal immigrant legalization," said Kaus.

Kaus' campaign adeed: "She could, of course, also force Mickey Kaus to debate her preferred issues--such as the environment, or abortion. With the BP spill in the papers, you'd think she would have the upper hand."

The Kaus campaign will provide a decent-sized space, with two lecterns and a pitcher of water, for a nice, civil debate. The press is being invited. "The whole thing will take less than an hour," said a spokesman.

"We'll also have video cameras--probably Flips. Senator Boxer should feel free to bring her own cameras or--if she prefers--video can be prohibited.

"The important thing is to have an argument, so voters can make up their mind."

"I'll be there," said Kaus. "I'm worried she might clobber me," he added, in an apparent attempt to lower expectations. "She's an experienced debater, after all."

The debate will proceed whether or not Sen. Boxer shows up, he said.

The Golden Gateway Holiday Inn is located at 1500 Van Ness Ave. The event is scheduled for the California Room.
